CWP Courses

How do I get my SC Concealable Weapons Permit?
You must attend a CWP course taught by a SLED-certified instructor. You'll receive a training certificate signed by the instructor, along with everything you need to mail to SLED including fingerprint cards, copy of drivers license, and training certificate.

How long is the CWP course?
By state law, a minimum of 8 hours, including range time. CWPcourses.com offers one-day courses on Saturdays and Sundays at Myrtle Grove Gun Club in Longs. CWPcourses.com also offers private course instruction at your home or office throughout the Grand Strand area.

Will I shoot?
Yes. In addition to passing a written test, you must demonstrate proficiency with a handgun. You will shoot at a target from a distance of 3-15 yards, expending a total of 50 rounds.

Note: Those opting for in-home private instruction will have a private session at a shooting range to complete their CWP course.

What if I want my CWP, but don't think I can pass the range qualification?
Most individuals who have shot before find it relatively easy to pass the range test. However, CWPcourses.com offers personalized instruction at a shooting range. One of our professional instructors will work with you until you are fully comfortable operating the handgun you plan to use for the CWP course.

What are the requirements to take the course?
You must be a SC resident, at least 21 years of age and you cannot have a criminal record. If you do not reside in South Carolina, but you own real estate in SC, you also qualify to take the SC CWP course.

What do I bring to the course?
  • Your handgun, unloaded, in a carry case. DO NOT BRING YOUR HANDGUN INTO THE CLASSROOM. Leave it locked in the trunk of your vehicle. Additionally, DO NOT bring any ammunition into the classroom.
  • Holster or other method of carrying concealed, such as a conceal carry handbag
  • Appropriate ammunition for your handgun, 100 rounds (typically 2 boxes). Factory ammo only; NO re-loads allowed.
  • Hearing & eye protection
  • Notepad and pen
  • Valid drivers license
  • A bag lunch. You will not have time to leave the property during lunch break as there aren't any restaurants near the gun club. You're also welcome to bring water, sodas, snacks, etc. to have during the class.

Tell me more about your in-home CWP course.
Many people, due to scheduling conflicts or privacy concerns, prefer to have the CWP course taught in their home or office. There is a flat fee for this service, plus a per-person charge. The home or office being utilized must have an appropriate training space with a TV and DVD player and seating for all attending. After the in-home course presentation, participants must attend a private session at a shooting range to complete the course and obtain their training certificate.

What if I need some shooting practice and help on the range?
No problem! A CWPcourses.com NRA-certified instructor will work with you at the shooting range to address your specific needs. First and foremost is always safe gun handling. Additionally, your instructor can work with you on loading and clearing your handgun, proper stance, shooting techniques, tips on achieving accuracy and more.
